Artist Statement
Deuce utilises self portraiture to examine the downward spiral of the human spirit. The diptych suggests a duality of defeat and triumph within the artist’s struggle to inhabit her homeland; a coal mining community. The homeland is the place in which we dwell; where we go to ground and seek refuge in the most natural and ancient of shelters – the cave. It is here that civilisation confronts the wilderness and undermines the fragility of nature as the supporter of human life. Degradation of the homeland leads to the spiritual and physical degradation of the self and ultimately the species. Deuce is the lowest roll of the dice.
