Self Portrait with Perico

Artist Statement
1992 Mendoza Provence, Argentina. A self-portrait in the foothills of the Andes with Perico, a travelling companion and art project cat.
1993 the photograph was printed by me in the Australian Centre for Photography's darkroom on Oxford Street Paddington.
2006 pinned to my studio wall in the Vale of Clwydd, Lithgow.
2021 photographed with an iPhone and posted to Instagram.
2024 removed from the studio wall and framed.
A witness to the delicate ravaging of ambient light and time on a photograph. Direct afternoon sunlight during the midwinter periods gently coloured and peeled the milky way across the surface, melding the patina of light and time with the memories. How long can a photograph last?
In the early 1990’s, an art project. People, animals and a high altitude land that was once the bottom of an ocean. Perico died and was given a burial after being photographed endlessly over that day. Somewhat sad now is the holding of the framed print in my hands, holding my gaze to the image in 2024.
Now an aperture into the endless, true depths of what photography can yield.
