Artist Statement
Unearthed utilises black-and-white film negatives layered with colour digital video to highlight Jessie Hickman’s connection to the Wollemi region. Though buried in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle, Hickman’s spirited presence prevails in the valleys, escarpments and upon the wilderness pathways that linked the bush locations she frequented. Projected onto the Bush Curtain in the gallery, Unearthed is part of the Women’s History installation piece within the exhibition The Carousel of Invisibility, which seeks to uncover the invisible history of women.
